Spartans break even at EC meet

The Spartans came up even, one loss and one win, at a recent two-round wrestling match at Eastside Catholic.

SEATTLE – The Spartans came up even, one loss and one win, at a recent two-round wrestling match at Eastside Catholic.

The Bainbridge High varsity wrestling team first lost 42-24 against Roosevelt High, then came back big to win 40-36 over Franklin.

Against Roosevelt, the Spartans found themselves facing an almost immediate points deficit.

There was a double forfeit in the 106-pound class and then Bainbridge’s Koa Goff claimed a 6-3 decision win over Logan Murphy.

Then, Roosevelt got on a bit of a run.

In the 126-pound match, Roosevelt’s  Ben Kriesberg pinned Myron Butler in 5:08.

The Rough Riders claimed a win by forfeit in the 132-pound class.

Then, in the 138-pound match, Eric Choy pinned Bainbridge’s Fernando Soria in 1:47.

Jack Miller turned the tide for the Spartans briefly when he pinned Roosevelt’s Elijah Ryser in 1:02.

Bainbridge’s Hague Bush pinned Taka Holds in 3:21, claiming a win in the 152-pound match as well.

In the 160-pound match, Roosevelt’s Jody Caerns claimed a decision victory over Joaquin Gurza, winning 4-3. Likewise, Tom Skoog won 4-1 over Bainbridge’s Aaron Jumpa in the 170-pound match.

Liam Topham swung things back around for Bainbridge with a 6-1 win over Jordan Frost in the 182-pound class.

Finally, Roosevelt locked up the last three heavyweight matches with forfeit wins.

In the second round against Franklin, BHS faired better.

Franklin claimed a win by forfeit in the 106-pound match. Then, in the 113-pound class, Goff brought home an 11-7 win by decision over Hoang Pham.

Cade Topham pinned Vanady Keo in 1:11 to lock down the 120-pound match for BHS.

Butler also pinned his opponent, Chiem Saeteurn, in 1:50 to win the 126-pound match.

Franklin claimed the 132-pound match by forfeit.

Soria found himself pinned by Franklin’s Ian Bellincia in 2:37 in the 138-pound match.

Then, in the 145-pound match, Miller again claimed a win for BHS by pinning Samuel Sibhatu in 3:55.

Bush claimed a Spartan victory by decision, 15-14, over Syler Tran in the 152-pound match.

Gurza won the 160-pound match in a 14-1 major decision over Franklin’s Jimmy Truong and Jumpa brought home the 170-pound match when he pinned Franklin’s Angelo Belinicia in 1:11 in the 170-pound match.

Finally, Liam Topham claimed his second victory of the night in the 182-pound class, this time pinning Franklin’s Yohannes Tassau in 1:44.

Franklin did claim the final three matches of the night by forfeit, but it was not enough to save them.
