Spartans advance to swim final

Two Spartan relay teams and two individual swimmers made it through the preliminary round Friday to compete in the 3A state championship at King County Aquatic Center Saturday.

The top eight finishers in each event advanced to the championship final, while the ninth through 16th place finishers will compete in the consolation final. Both rounds begin at 10:15 a.m. Saturday.

The Spartans’ 200-meter freestyle relay team, which didn’t qualify for state until last week’s district meet, finished sixth. Kay Sterner, Tess Harpur, Sarah Grundman and Cameo Hlebasko finished the race with at time of one minute, 43 seconds.

Bainbridge’s 400-meter freestyle relay team placed sixth with a time of 3:47:09.

Grundman placed sixth (1:58:95) in the 200-meter freestyle, and Sterner placed eighth (1:59:55), qualifying for Saturday’s championship final.

In the 500-meter freestyle, Grundman won her heat and placed fourth overall with a time of 5:11:29. Sterner finished 11th (5:18:87)

Tess Harpur placed 10th in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter butterfly.

The Spartans’ 200-meter medley relay team of Sonnenfeld, Estes, Harpur and Sterner placed 15th with a time of 2:00:25, qualifying for the consolation round.

Emily Sonnenfeld placed 18th in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:03:17.

Kayla Estes finished 22nd in the 100-meter breaststroke.
