‘Phenomenal’ finish for BHS

BAINBRIDGE – The Spartans corralled the Rams with a win in girls varsity gymnastics in a Friday Metro meet at home.

Bainbridge High won with a team total of 169.8 over Ingraham’s 136.7.

Bainbridge Coach Cindy Guy had one word for the high score.

“Phenomenal.”

“We’re very pleased with our team score,” she said.

“That score is very comparable to what Holy Names has been scoring.

It’s going to be a big match for us coming up this week.

SiQi Talley was the all-around champ for the Spartans, and finished first with a total of 35.8.

In a close second was teammate Remi Rosencrans, with 34.3.

Emma Chee was third with 32.8, followed by her Spartan sister Morgan Dietrickx, with 31.7.

The Spartans began the meet with a dominating showing in vault, with Talley placing first (8.6) and Detrickx, second (8.4).

The other finalists were also from Bainbridge, with a tie for third/fourth with Chee and Althea Pippenger at 8.3, and Rosencrans and Daniles following, both at 8.2.

“Our vault was the highest score we’ve gotten all season,” said Coach Guy.

Changes made by the girls paid off, she said.

“We’ve tried some harder values,” she said.

Those tougher tweaks will continue with Holy Names Academy on the schedule for Friday.

“We trained really hard yesterday to add even more harder values. We think it’s going to help us achieve a higher score,” she said.

As well as the Spartans improved in vault, the girls’ total on uneven parallel bars was big time.

“We broke a 40, which is amazing. It’s a super high score for us.”

Talley placed first in bars (9.3), with Rosencrans claiming second (9.0).

Mariko Ronan also impressed with a 7.8 for her routine.

“And Emma Chee had one of her highest bar scores of the season,” the coach added, noting the Spartan’s fourth-place finish with a 7.4.

Briana Bruyere won first on balance beam for Bainbridge, with a score of 9.3.

“It was an absolutely gorgeous routine,” Guy said.

Nearly flawless, it prompted Bruyere’s selection as an WIAA Athlete of the Week.

Overall, there were sure steps, and missteps, on beam.

“We had a few falls and few missed connections on beam but we still scored pretty well,” Guy said.

“We worked on beam for about 40 minutes yesterday, and I think we’ve corrected some of the mistakes and cleaned up the routines,” she said.

Talley also excelled on the floor exercise, taking first with a 9.3.

Rosencrans was second with a 9.2, followed by Chee in third, 9.0.

The beam will be an important event for Bainbridge on Friday, and the team hopes to crack a 40 score.
