Loverich homers to beat Newport

The Spartans bounced back from a 6-4 loss to Ballard early last week to knock out the Knights in a 10-8 thriller in girls varsity fastpitch softball.

BAINBRIDGE – The Spartans bounced back from a 6-4 loss to Ballard early last week to knock out the Knights in a 10-8 thriller in girls varsity fastpitch softball.

Newport jumped to a two-run headstart in the first inning, and Bainbridge answered with a run to cut the Knights’ lead to 2-1.

The Spartans moved in front with three runs in the third inning, 4-2, but Newport retook the lead with three runs of their own in the fourth, then tacked on two more in the sixth for a 7-4 advantage.

Bainbridge squeezed out another run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Knights added another run in the top of the seventh to open the gap to 8-5.

Then it came time for the Spartans to say good night, good Knights.

Maddie Loverich sealed the win by slamming a three-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to cap a five-run inning.

Loverich finished on 1-for-2 batting.

Malia Peato came up big for Bainbridge; she picked up her second win on the mound and went 4-for-4 with three RBIs.

The victory pushed Bainbridge’s record to 4-3 (2-1 Metro League).
