Lions dominate in tennis

BAINBRIDGE – The Spartans fell to arch rival Lakeside in boys and girls varsity tennis Tuesday, 5-0, 5-0.

“We were ready and gave it our best today. Didn’t go our way this time,” noted Spartan Coach Jennifer Anne Shorr.

There were, however, many close and competitive matches from the whole team, Shorr added.

The Spartans knew the Metro matchup at home would be a tough won; the Lakeside boys have won the Metro League title the last five consecutive years, and the Lion girls have lost only a single match in the same time frame.

The Spartans saw a great match in girls No. 1 singles, with Madison Culp edged 5-7 in a thriller in the third set.

In No. 2 girls singles, Sofia lost a tough match 6-7, 3-6.

In No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, each Spartan pair took close losses with one going to a second set tiebreaker (Katie Hughes and Jillian Abullarade).

At No. 2 it was a tight 6-4, 7-5 match (Mollie Alpaugh and Juli Bakke).

On the boys’ side, Bjorn Stanley and Liam Welch lost a close match 6-4, 6-4 in No. 2 doubles.

At No. 3 doubles, Oscar Bray and Christian Barrett had a heartbreak 6-4 loss in the third set.

At No. 2 singles, Bainbridge’s Asher Van Slyke also fell 6-3 in the third.

The Spartans’ superb JV Team pulled out an impressive win against Lakeside, with 4-1 scores from the boys and the girls.
