STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Jake Knostman scored two goals for the Stags last week during Fairfield University’s nail-biter against Stony Brook in mens lacrosse.

The Seawolves netted the first two goals of the contest and stayed in front for the duration. They sent the Stags headed to the locker room facing a 6-3 deficit at halftime.
Knostman, a former Bainbridge Spartan standout and second-year Stag, opened the second half scoring on a feed from Colin McLinden, but Stony Brook netted the next two markers to double up Fairfied, 8-4.
Knostman’s second goal cut Stony Brook to a 9-8 edge, but the Seawolves scored again and stayed in front to the finish for the 10-9 decision.
Fairfield outshot the Seawolves, 38-24, and held a 34-23 lead in ground balls. The Stags were edged in turnovers, committing 15 while pressuring the hosts into 13 miscues.
Fairfield continues its road swing this Saturday, March 7, with a short trip to Yale University for a faceoff against the Bulldogs, who are ranked as high as No. 6 in the national polls this week.
Fairfield-Yale preview notes
Unbeaten Yale welcomes the Stags for a 1:30 p.m. contest at Reese Stadium.
The Stags will challenge Yale for the ninth time in program history Saturday. Fairfield’s 12-11 overtime win over the Bulldogs last spring was the first victory for the Stags in the series after seven consecutive losses.
The slate between the in-state foes dates back to the Stags’ first-ever MAAC Championship season of 1996.
Last season’s Fairfield win marked the third one-goal decision in the series and the five meeting decided by three goals or fewer.
Seventh-year Stags head coach Andy Copelan is 1-2 against the Bulldogs.
