Island wrestlers claim fourth spot at Metro Tournament

The Spartans are riding high in the saddle as the end of another wrestling season approaches more rapidly than the mat during a well-executed takedown.

SEATTLE – The Spartans are riding high in the saddle as the end of another wrestling season approaches more rapidly than the mat during a well-executed takedown.

The Bainbridge High varsity wrestling team secured the fourth-place spot overall at the recent Metro Tournament at Eastside Catholic with a team score of 161.5.

O’Dea was the top-ranked team, with an overall score of 276.5. Roosevelt locked up the second-place spot with 274.0.

Also present at the tournament were wrestlers from Bishop Blanchet, Ingraham, Franlin, Eastside Catholic, Nathan Hale, Chief Sealth, Ballard Lakeside, Garfield, West Seattle, Cleveland and Rainier Beach.

Several Spartans claimed top spots at the league championships, including two first-place finishers.

Cade Topham was ranked third in the 120-pound bracket, having secured a win over Roosevelt’s Eli Teagle with a 4:53 pin.

Spartan star Jack Miller claimed the top spot in the 138-pound bracket.

After advancing through two initial byes, Miller pinned his next three straight opponents (in 42 seconds against Ingraham’s Colin Harrop, in 5:33 against O’Dea’s Ellis Tran and in just 30 seconds against Roosevelt’s Erik Choi) to secure the win.

Hague Bush managed to fight his way to third-place in the 152-pound bracket, as did Aaron Jumpa in the 160-pound contest.

Liam Topham battled his way to the top spot in the 170-pound bracket with an impeccable 15-0 decision win over Jimmy Troung of Franklin High.

Topham moved through a first-round bye to pin his next three successive opponents (in 3:27 against W. Stowers, a non-scorer, in 1:09 against Alex Benson, another non-scorer, and in 1:21 against Blanchet’s Noah Traynor).

The squad will advance to compete in the Metro League varsity district finals this weekend at Chief Sealth High.
