The Bainbridge Roller Hockey League’s annual Battle for the Point tournament and barbecue will return to Battle Point Park Friday, June 24.

Founded in 1996, BRHL is a co-ed, mixed-ability recreational roller hockey league for players aged 7-17. Players are grouped into three divisions based on age: DI, 7-10; D2, 11-13; and D3, 14-17.

The Battle for the Point is a day-long tournament beginning at 9 a.m., featuring exhibition matches between teams in both DI and DII.

“We usually have a fun all day tournament with the barbecue and sometimes we mix up the kids on different squads so they get a chance to play with new players on that day,” explained BRHL president Bruce Barcott.

There are about 100 players in the two younger divisions this season, he added.

The island roller hockey season officially began about a month ago, but two upcoming skills camps being offered later this month and mid-July in conjunction with the Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District will allow interested athletes to learn the game. There is also a more intensive camp planned for the winter season.

The league sees young athletes both solely dedicated to hockey and many multi-sport enthusiasts as well, Barcott said.

“We get a really interesting mix of players for whom this is the one organized sport they play all year and we have other players who play other sports,” he said.

“They play lacrosse, they play basketball, they play baseball. For a number of kids they also play ice hockey during the winter and they come over and play roller hockey during summer.”
