Freak play tough on 9/10 girls at tourney

“What girls softball 9/10 All-Stars coach Tony Gaspich called the weirdest play I’ve ever seen was a major factor in the team’s 3-2 loss on Sunday to Redmond West in the state tournament in Vancouver.Following wins in the team’s two opening games – including Haylee Baker’s no-hitter on Saturday – the defeat set up a loser-out game yesterday. A Bainbridge win would provide a rematch tonight against Redmond, and a win then would result in a final game on Thursday for the title trophy. With Sunday’s game tied 2-2 after the regulation six innings, Bainbridge loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth.Cara Thompson ripped a low line shot that the Redmond shortstop briefly gloved, then dropped. The runner on second broke for third but was tagged out by the shortstop, who then fired home to the catcher. She stepped on home plate and the Redmond team trotted off the field, thinking they’d just turned a double play. But they hadn’t, as tagging the runner removed the force at home. Unfortunately, the Bainbridge runner on third apparently thought the same thing, and walked out of the baseline. That made her the third out.In the Redmond half of the eighth, a walk, double, and walk loaded the bases, and the next batter walked on a three-two pitch to force in the winning run and end the game.It was just dumb luck, said Gaspich of the unusual play. It all happened so quickly that no one knew what was happening. But it was a fantastic game, and our kids played great.Starting pitcher Lindsey Willman gave up just one hit and struck out 12 in her allotted six innings.Bainbridge picked up its two runs in the third as Brittany Wisner walked, stole second and third, and scored on a passed ball. Two outs later, Ariel Hujar had an infield single, also stole second and third, and came home on a fielding error.Redmond knotted the score in the fifth on a walk, a bunt single and Bainbridge errors.Bainbridge opened the tournament on Friday against South Everett with another nail-biter.Giving up unearned runs in the first and fourth, Bainbridge trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Hujar led off with a walk and stole second. Baker doubled her home. After a strikeout, Thompson’s single scored Baker to tie the score. Kaitlin Gaspich’s two-out single advanced Thompson to third, and she raced home on a passed ball for the winning run.The following afternoon, walks and errors put Bainbridge down to Woodinville 3-0 after an inning and a half. But they erupted for five runs in the second, added two more in the third and put the game away with five in the fifth for a 12-4 win.As soon as Haylee smells blood, she rises to the occasion and simply gets better, Gaspich said. They never hit the ball out of the infield and she had 13 strikeouts.Bainbridge pounded out 10 hits and benefited from 13 walks. Thompson had three hits and two RBIs, while Hujar, Willman and Jenny Whealdon each had two. Willman also knocked in three runs. The kids got clutch hits when we needed them, said Gaspich. There’s a lot of excitement going on. “
