The Cleveland Eagles outlasted the Bainbridge Spartans 28-20 in the first Memorial Football Classic Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

The Cleveland Eagles outlasted the Bainbridge Spartans 28-20 in the first Memorial Football Classic Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

It was a hard-fought battle that was decided in the final quarter.

The Spartans and Eagles ended the first quarter tied at 7-7 after a 19-yard scamper into the end zone by Jayvion Sims for Cleveland and a 1-yard touchdown run by Spartan quarterback Casey Brink.

Cleveland started to pull away with a 15-point second quarter that gave the Eagles a 22-7 advantage.

Cleveland quarterback Amonte Phillips taxed Bainbridge for two touchdowns in the quarter, the first on a 1-yard burst for six points, and on the second, he connected with Zechariah Brown on a 60-yard pass play for the score.

The Spartans held Cleveland scoreless in the third, however, and Max Wickline pulled in a 10-yard toss from quarterback Kyle Jackson for Bainbridge’s second touchdown of the day.

Up 22-14 going into the final stanza, Cleveland scored again when Phillips carried the ball in from 24 yards out.

Bainbridge’s final score came from a 1-yard run from Jackson.

Cleveland improved to 1-1 with the win; Bainbridge fell to 0-2.
