Club swimmers fare well at meets

BAINBRIDGE – Bainbridge Island Swim Club athletes recently competed at two semi-national level championship meets, Futures Championships and Western Zone Age Group Championships.

These two meets were season-ending long course meter championship meets for those athletes that qualified.

Six swimmers qualified to swim at the Futures Championships held at Stanford University on Aug. 4-7. This meet has competitive time standards that serve as a stepping stone to junior nationals and showcased many college swimmers.

The six Bainbridge Island Swim Club swimmers included Eleanor Beers (age 14), Candace Rosen (18), Kevin Houseman (15), Makai Ingalls (15), Garrett Waite (15) and Jude Wenker (14).

The top 30 swimmers in preliminaries earned the chance to swim again in finals.

In finals, the following Bainbridge swimmers competed and placed:

Eleanor Beers: Eighth place, 100-meter butterfly; 11th, 50-meter freestyle; 18th, 100-meter freestyle

Garrett Waite: 10th, 200-meter backstroke

Kevin Houseman: 20th, 100-meter breaststroke

Makai Ingalls: 23rd, 100-meter backstroke

Seven Bainbridge club swimmers were selected by Pacific Northwest Swimming to represent the region at the Western Zone Age Group Championships held in Kearns, Utah, on Aug. 10-13.

The seven Bainbridge Island Swim Club swimmers included Curtis Stewart (10 & under age group), Margaret Hayes (11-12 age group), Collin Bushey (11-12 age group), Ian Lipton (11-12 age group), Eleanor Beers, (13-14 age group), Andrew Witty (13-14 age group), and Jude Wenker (13-14 age group).

The PNS team of 66 swimmers won the meet overall, closely followed by Colorado.

All Bainbridge club swimmers were on relays that scored points for the PNS team. Ian Lipton, Eleanor Beers and Jude Wenker all won an individual event, and Margaret Hayes won four individual events.

Swimmers that placed in the top 16 in preliminaries won the chance to swim in finals.

Individual Bainbridge club swimmers who placed top 16 in finals include:

Margaret Hayes: First place, 50-meter backstroke; first, 100-meter backstroke; first, 200-meter backstroke; first, 50-meter butterfly; second, 50-meter freestyle; second, 100-meter butterfly

Collin Bushey: 12th, 200-meter backstroke; 14th, 100-meter backstroke; 15th, 50-meter butterfly

Ian Lipton: First, 200-meter backstroke; second, 100-meter backstroke; sixth, 50-meter backstroke

Eleanor Beers: First, 100-meter freestyle; second, 50-meter freestyle; second, 100-meter butterfly; fifth, 200-meter freestyle

Andrew Witty: Eighth, 100-meter backstroke; 11th, 200-meter breaststroke; 14th, 50-meter freestyle

Jude Wenker: First, 100-meter freestyle; second, 50-meter freestyle; third, 200-meter freestyle; fifth, 200-meter individual medley; 10th, 200-meter breaststroke

Bainbridge Island Swim Club swimmers will race again beginning in October for the 2016-17 short course yard season.
