BI divers make a splash at invite

Eight divers from the Bainbridge Island Dive Club competed with 32 other Northwest divers at the Y Spring Invitational dive meet in Boise, Idaho.

BOISE, Idaho – Eight divers from the Bainbridge Island Dive Club competed with 32 other Northwest divers at the Y Spring Invitational dive meet in Boise, Idaho.

Memorable performances included those in the 12/13-year-old age group, such as Mia Alpaugh, who in her first Junior Olympic event placed sixth on both 1-meter, with a score of 124.75, and 3-meter with a score of 117.25; and Bryn Tiernan who in the same event clinched third place on 3-meter with a score of 174.75 and fifth on 1-meter, scoring 138.95.

In the 12/13-year-old boys Junior Olympic events, diver Henry Sauermann placed third both in the 1-meter, with a score of 142.05, and in the 3-meter, with a score of 177.85. Teammate Brian Taylor dove for first on 3-meter with a score of 189 and second on 1-meter, scoring 170.45.

In the Future Champions category in both 1-meter, scoring 124, and 3-meter, scoring 110.5, first place went to diver Carter Wolff.

The team’s triad of high school girls — Jackie Hellmers, Cammy Rouser and Zora Opalka — competed in the 16 to 18-year-old girls Junior Olympics 1-meter and 3-meter events.

In the 1-meter competition, Hellmers won third place with a score of 236.25, Rouser took second with 272.5, and Opalka finished first, scoring 312.3.

On 3-meter, Hellmers again placed third with 251.05, while Rouser took second with 302.50, and Opalka was first, with a score of 328.35.

The team is looking forward to its next big meet, USA Diving Region 10 Championships, scheduled to take place April 29 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
