Bainbridge now 5-0 in water polo

BAINBRIDGE – When two undefeated teams meet on the field — or rather the pool — of battle, you just know somebody’s trudging home sad.

The Bainbridge High varsity boys water polo team had the shorter, but much happier, commute after remaining undefeated and beating the visitors from Gig Harbor 11-8 at the Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center Tuesday.

The win advanced the team’s perfect season record to 5-0.

Neither squad managed to break onto the score board for most of the first quarter, but with about 2:40 left to go Bainbridge had managed to pull ahead 2-0.

Gig Harbor answered back quickly and the quarter ended 2-1 BHS.

In the second quarter, Bainbridge gained some ground — but barely outpaced Gig Harbor, who were nipping at their heels.

With about 5 minutes left in the first half, the Spartans led 4-3. Then, by the break, they had put up three more goals against the visitors’ two and the game sat 7-5 BHS at the half.

The third quarter saw a flurry of goals by Bainbridge, which put them up 10-8 by the buzzer. They would manage one more in the game’s last minutes and Gig Harbor would be unable to mount a response in time.

The entire match saw equivocal strikes on both sides of the clearly evenly-matched contest.

Team captain Jem Bullock led the Spartan scoring effort with four goals.

Will Thompson put up three, as did Harrison Shinohara, and Sam Chapman managed one.

The island team will next play host to Wilson High on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
