Bainbridge divers advance to championships

The Bainbridge Island Dive Club jumped into the ferociously competitive fray of the Junior Region 10 Championships this past weekend in Beaverton and two divers earned a chance to compete at the USA Diving Zone E Championship meet next month.

BEAVERTON, Oregon – The Bainbridge Island Dive Club jumped into the ferociously competitive fray of the Junior Region 10 Championships this past weekend in Beaverton and two divers earned a chance to compete at the USA Diving Zone E Championship meet next month.

The regional meet last week allowed the team’s members from Bainbridge, Kingston and Poulsbo to test their abilities against teams from Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, California, Nevada, Texas and Hawaii.

Two of the team’s members, Bryn Tiernan and Henry Sauerman, will advance to the Zone E meet for both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards. The championships are June 9-14 at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton.

For the Girls 11 and under group, Bryn Tiernan of the Bainbridge Island Dive Club placed 12th on the 1-meter with a score of 110.80 and 10th on the 3-meter by scoring 123.70.

In the Girls 14/15-year-old division, Jackie Hellmers of Poulsbo placed 19th on the 1-meter with a score of 162.85 and placed 19th again on the 3-meter board with a score of 195.65.

Zora Opalka of Bainbridge earned a 32nd place on the 1M board with a score of 166.10 and a 24th-place finish on the 3-meter board with a score of 325.6 in the Girls 16/18-year-old division.

Cammie Rouser of Kingston also competed in the Girls 16/18-year-old division and placed 42nd on the 1-meter with a score of 132.90 and came in 33rd on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 295.60.

In the Boys 12/13-year-old division, Henry Sauermann of Bainbridge Island took home a seventh-place finish on the 1-meter where he scored 152.50. On the 3-meter board, he again placed seventh with a score of 152.85.

The team is looking forward to its next international meet in Victoria, British Columbia in May and then it’s back to Beaverton in June for the two qualifying team members.
