Bainbridge discus thrower sets new school record

Anna Kaminski set a new school record in the discus to highlight the BHS track team’s performance in the Tacoma Invitational last Saturday. Kaminski unleashed a throw of 122 feet, five inches to break the previous standard of 121-0 set by Jennifer Chapman in 1978.

The performance, which moved her up to second in Class 3A rankings, was even more impressive because it came hard on the heels of a weeks-long bout with pneumonia.

In addition, the girls 4×400 relay team regained their 3A state-best status as Isabel Ferguson, Courtney Odell, Sylvia Stellmacher and Pearl Terry ran 4:07.48 to win the event.

“All the girls ran PRs [personal records],” said assistant coach Garry Osmond. “Isabel sub-61, Pearl and Courtney sub-62 and Sylvia sub-63, after recently recovering from shin splints.”

Anne Taylor joined Ferguson, Odell and Terry to place second in the distance medley relay, clocking 13:09.90. Zach Haus, Willie Wenzlau, Griffin Dunn and Ryan Vogel were third in the same event on the boys’ side in a time of 11:16.32.

Haus was also fifth in the frosh-soph 1600 in 4:51.30. Emily Barreca knocked 15 seconds off her season-best with her third-place finish in the 3200 meters in 11:44.45.

Overall, the girls placed seventh of 37 teams with 34 points, while the boys were 30th of 36 with six points.

In a three-way meet with Chief Sealth and West Seattle two days earlier, Brad Wilmot, Tess Harpur, Barecca, Kaminski, Ferguson and Terry were all double winners. Wilmot high jumped 5-2 and triple jumped 37-9 ½. Harpur swept the hurdles, clocking 17.6 for the 100 highs and 51.3 in the 300 intermediates. Barecca ran 5:41.60 in the 1600 and 11:59.60 in the 3200.

Kaminski won the shot put (32-11 ¼) and discus (112-5). Ferguson placed first in the 400 in 61.5, Terry took the 800 in 2:27.30, and Ferguson and Terry both cleared 4-6 in the high jump.

James Herman threw the shot 48-10 for one of the day’s best marks.
