Bainbridge beats Overlake, advances to state lacrosse semifinals

Two early scores may have given Overlake a glimmer of hope, but the Spartan girls lacrosse team soon dashed any dream of a trip to the state semifinals for the Owls Thursday at Bainbridge Stadium.

Two early scores may have given Overlake a glimmer of hope, but the Spartan girls lacrosse team soon dashed any dream of a trip to the state semifinals for the Owls Thursday at Bainbridge Stadium.

After a sluggish start, the Spartans roared back to knot the score at 3-3 at 8:01 in the first, then led 5-3 at the end of the half. Bainbridge never trailed again and the Spartans won 17-5 in their quarterfinal matchup against No. 8 Overlake.

BHS is now within one win of reaching its eighth consecutive Washington Lacrosse Girls State Championship game.

The Spartans broke the game open in the second half. Bainbridge held Overlake to just two goals while pouring on 12 of its own.

Bainbridge senior midfielder Kelsey Mackin — who was named

Player of the Week by ESPN HS for her play during the final week of regular season — had six goals and four assists against the Owls.

Senior midfielder Olivia Smith also added six goals for BHS.  Madeline Stevenson had 12 saves in goal.

Other Spartans contributing to the win were Theo Fehsenfeld with three goals (two assists, three draw controls, one ground ball); Grace Deery-Schmitt with two goals (plus three draw controls, two caused turnovers, two ground balls); Bea Sheffer (four ground balls, one draw control); Paige Brigham (one draw control, one ground ball); and Cappy Yarbrough (three draw controls, two caused turnovers, three ground balls). Mackin also had one draw control and two caused turnovers.

For the Owls, Grace Rub had thee goals, Zoe Pinczower had a goal and controlled six draws, and Emma Howard had 14 saves in goal.

Overlake finished the season with an 8-5-1 record (7-4-1 in the regular season).

Thursday’s victory was the 12th consecutive win for Bainbridge this season.

The No. 1 Spartans (12-1-1 overall) will have a semifinal matchup with the winner of the Issaquah-Mercer Island quarterfinal matchup.

Issaquah plays Mercer Island Friday at Skyline High School.

The two schools were the only rough spots on the Spartans’ schedule this season.

Bainbridge lost 11-10 against Issaquah at the start of the season, and tied Mercer Island 15-15 in the second game.
