BACK TO THE TRACK: Kiwanis All-Comers returns to Bainbridge High

Fireworks fade, sun burns heal, hot dogs mold, but glory — and bragging rights — are forever. Or at least for a week.

Fireworks fade, sun burns heal, hot dogs mold, but glory — and bragging rights — are forever.

Or at least for a week.

There was plenty of glory to go around Monday at Bainbridge High School during the first Kiwanis All-Comers track meet of 2016, the beloved weekly summertime staple which brings runners of all ages and skill levels out to compete in a variety of events for fun and pride.

Sponsored by the Bainbridge Kiwanis Club and officiated by volunteers from Kiwanis and the BHS Cross Country team, the free meets are open to everyone — kids, teenagers, adults and senior citizens. They are held at the high school track at 6:30 p.m. every Monday through Aug. 15, with the jogger’s mile held first and the climactic relay at about 8:30 p.m.

Participants should arrive by 6:15 to register and stretch.

Though actual turnout for the initial meet was a bit lower than expected, organizer Paul Benton said that some stellar performances set the tone for the season.

“Teenager Sarah Salot opened the season’s first All-Comers meet by showing how the jogger’s mile should be run [and] hitting her predicted time of 8 [minutes] exactly,” he said. “Family teams dominated the rest of the meet. The four Hart kids — James, 3, Julie, 6, Amy, 8, and Carly, 10 — took five first and three second places.

“Three Rufo-Hill girls, Rosie and Izzy, 4, and Magda, 6, had four wins and four second places,” he added. “The Godfrey sisters, Catrina, 6, and Cady, 9, won five events between them and, most impressively, the Haizlip brothers — Owen, 4, and Cole, 7 — won seven of the eight events they entered, with Cole losing only to 8-year-old Magnus Hauge in the 200.”

Speedy Magnus won all four events he ran, as did William Pancholi, 6, Emma Delecki, 5, Calvin Moe, 12, and Audrey Nelson, 13.
