Let’s talk trails in your neighborhood | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

We at the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation gave a cheer when we read Ameta Macaluso’s letter in praise of paths and trails.

Our Island trail system is a beloved community amenity. The parks foundation is dedicated to helping build new trails and maintain existing trails.

More than 30 years ago informal trails crossed the island, but increasing development wiped out many trails and others were closed to public use. In the last 20 years the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Rec District has been developing trails. With help from the Bainbridge Community Foundation we created the Summer Trails Crew – a team of young adults – who construct new trails and repair and maintain old favorites.

Our park district does a great job and with our help now maintain 34 miles of trails. The city also works to provide trails for improved non-motorized transportation. Trail volunteers have been enthusiastic workers, picking away at a list of trails yet to be constructed. And there are some great trail projects in the works.

You too can help expand and improve our trails: Check the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation website for work parties, make a donation online or through One Call for All. Get in touch and let’s talk about trails in your neighborhood. The parks foundation promises to leverage your support for even more and better trails!
