Erik ‘Stan’ Lund

      Erik “Stan” Lund died peacefully July 15 while visiting family in Vermont. He was 93.

      Erik was born Dec. 5, 1917, on Bainbridge Island in a Finnish homestead.

      He graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1936, studied mechanical engineering for three years at the University of Washington and naval architecture at U. Michigan. He was employed at Winslow Shipyard when he married Jeane Navarre, in 1941. In World War II, he built Navy minesweepers and later earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering at U.W.

      In 33 years at Boeing Co. he developed cockpit lighting, traveled world testing runways and opened new markets.

      After he retired, he wrote an autobiography which is available at the Bainbridge Island Historical Museum. He was also active in helping to create a “John Nelson Park.”

      He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Jeane, who died in 2006.

      He is survived by son Erik Christian Lund; daughters Jan Buchanan, Karin Klein and Marianne Suss; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
