An 18-year-old Bainbridge Island woman was arrested after she allegedly crashed a car late Sunday and fought with police officers after the accident.

Island police responded to a car accident at the intersection of Highway 305 and Day Road just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30.

According to a police report on the incident, a driver in a white sedan failed to make a turn at the intersection, went off the road, crashed through a fence and smashed into a tree.

Two young women were in the car along with a young man who owned the car. All were under the age of 21.

The driver, an 18-year-old woman, said that the car had bad brakes and that it wouldn’t stop when she attempted to slow down and make the turn onto Day Road.

An officer smelled alcohol on the young woman, however, and suspected that she had been drinking that evening.

When confronted with questions about her drinking, the driver allegedly admitted to consuming three beers and said she was driving because she was the most sober out of the three in the car.

Police said the woman then became confrontational and after refusing to answer any more questions, she turned to walk away to be with her friends.

She then ignored an officer’s request to stay put, and said that she was done talking.

The officer then told the young woman he was placing her under arrest, but when he attempted to handcuff her, the woman broke free and ran across the intersection. She fell while running, but got back up and continued to flee.

Another officer was able to intercept and grab the woman around her waist, but she continued to fight police. A third officer then helped take the woman to the ground and the third officer placed handcuffs on her.

According to the police report, the woman continued to struggle as officers tried to put her into the back of a patrol car. She tried to run again, failed, and then proceeded to kick the side of the patrol car.

Police then placed restraints around her ankles to prevent her from running and kicking.

The woman received scrapes and bruises from the encounter, and scuffed her knuckles after falling to the ground while being handcuffed. An aid car was called to assist, and the woman’s hands were bandaged.

At the police station, officers administered two breath tests which registered .192 and .198 roughly two hours after the accident.

The woman had difficulty answering some of the officer’s basic questions at the station. When asked what city she was in, she replied, “It’s 2012.”

She also admitted to consuming three to four shots of rum. When police asked her if she believed her ability to drive was affected by alcohol, she answered, “Yeah, obviously.”

The questioning officer said he was sorry for the way things went down that night and the young woman said that it was her fault. She said she acted as she did because she was scared.

The woman was arrested for DUI and resisting arrest and taken to Kitsap County Jail.
