UPDATE | Vote tally grows for Bainbridge Sakai park proposal

Support for a new central park for Bainbridge Island continues to grow, according to the latest vote tally from the Feb. 10 Special Election.

Support for a new central park for Bainbridge Island continues to grow, according to the latest vote tally from the Feb. 10 Special Election.

The Kitsap County Elections Division released an updated vote tally late Wednesday for this week’s election, and voter approval of a $5.9 million bond measure to pay for the purchase of the 23-acre Sakai property has inched up to 69.6 percent voter approval.

Park officials plan to turn the mostly undeveloped land into a central area park, and support for the idea grew in the latest vote count, though slightly. (The 20-year bond proposal had picked up 68.9 percent of the votes in the first vote tally Tuesday.)

Election workers counted another 778 ballots Wednesday.

In the latest tally, Proposition 1 from the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District now has 6,193 “yes” votes, and 2,704 “no” votes.

Prop. 1 stands at 69.6 percent in favor, and 30.4 percent against.

The measure needed a 60-percent supermajority to pass.

Two other proposals were on the ballot, both sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Fire Department.

Prop. 1, a 9-cent levy increase to pay for more firefighters and EMTs to boost emergency coverage out of the department’s north end station on Phelps Road, has also found added support.

The measure now has 72.7 percent approval from voters, up from 72.3 percent on Election Night.

In the latest tally, opposition has dipped slightly to 27.3 percent (it was at 27.7 percent on Election Night).

Prop. 1 needs a simple majority to pass.

Prop. 2, a $16 million bond measure to pay for new and improved fire stations on Bainbridge, now stands with 63.6 percent of the vote, and 36.4 percent opposed.

That’s down a bit from the first vote tally, which had support at 63.4 percent. Opposition, however, is down from 36.6 percent in Tuesday’s count to 36.4 percent in Wednesday’s count.

Prop. 2 also needs a supermajority of 60 percent to pass.

Election officials said another tally will be conducted on Thursday, Feb. 12 and there will be approximately 50 ballots left to count.

A total of 8,908 ballots have been counted through Wednesday, and turnout was estimated at 50.1 percent.

Not every Bainbridge voter who cast a ballot voted for every proposition on Tuesday’s ballot.

More votes were cast for the park purchase proposal (8,897) than for the fire levy increase (8,814) or the fire station bond proposal (8,780).
