Tree falls and starts house fire on Bainbridge Island

A toppled tree hit power lines and sparked a house fire on the north end of Bainbridge Island Friday morning.

Firefighters quickly responded to the fire in the 12200 block of North Madison Avenue and put out the blaze, which was largely contained in a wall at the rear of the home.

No one was hurt in the fire, and officials said the home was vacant.

Assistant Chief Luke Carpenter of the Bainbridge Island Fire Department said a neighbor called 911 after seeing smoke coming from the back of the house, a single-story home built in 1971.

The call came in at 8:14 a.m.

Bainbridge Island was hit by an overnight storm Thursday that brought strong winds from the southwest that knocked down trees and power lines in scattered places across the island. The storm also left more than 70 homes near the Grand Forest and Fletcher Bay without power.

Carpenter, who is also fire marshal for Bainbridge Island, said a tree that fell across power lines near the home at 12291 North Madison Ave. was to blame for the fire.

“Basically it caused a power surge that caused an electrical wire going into the kitchen to do whatever it took to start a wall fire,” Carpenter said.

“The fire got started in the wall and vented to the outside,” he said.

Still, firefighters were concerned that the fire was spreading underneath the home, in a crawlspace about a foot deep.

With no outside access to the crawlspace, firefighters began working to rip up the floor so they could prevent the fire from spreading further.

Engines from Station 23 and Station 21 responded to the fire, along with the fire marshal, medic unit and other emergency responders.

Firefighters from North Kitsap and Poulsbo have also been called in to provide support, Carpenter said.

Water tenders were not needed, as the home was located close to a hydrant.

North Madison Avenue was closed to traffic Friday morning as firefighters put out the fire.
