Three Bainbridge police officers are being commended for their recent work saving lives on, and off, the island.

“These officers are being recognized for their outstanding resourcefulness in response to life-threatening situations, and their actions are examples of excellent police work,” said Police Commander Sue Shultz.

Detective Trevor Ziemba and Officer Richard Christopher were awarded commendations for their efforts in rescuing two canoeists whose boats capsized in Puget Sound just off Bainbridge Island.

Christopher was awarded another commendation along with Officer Ben Sias for their work tracking down a suicidal person on June 1. They were able to local the missing suicidal person in time to get help for the individual.

Christopher’s honors come during his final days patrolling the island. He submitted a two-week’s notice this month, and  indicated that he is retiring from the force.
