Solar panel dedication set for Earth Day

The city of Bainbridge Island and Puget Sound Energy invites the public to celebrate the dedication of the new solar panels at Waterfront Park Community Center 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 20.

The city of Bainbridge Island and Puget Sound Energy invites the public to celebrate the dedication of the new solar panels at Waterfront Park Community Center 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 20.

Attendees will also learn about ways to make homes more sustainable with solar, energy efficiency improvements or Green Power. The Solar Panel Dedication and Green Home Fair will take place on Earth Day.

As part of this week’s Earth Day festivities, the city is partnering with Puget Sound Energy to dedicate a new 5 kw solar system at Waterfront Park Community Center. This system was paid for through a grant from Puget Sound Energy that the city received as a result of Bainbridge Island residents winning a Green Power competition. The event will feature short presentations from Mayor Anne Blair, representatives from Puget Sound Energy, and island resident Erika Shriner, who will talk about why Green Power is important for the community.

The event will also include a Green Home Fair with representatives from A&R Solar, Puget Sound Cooperative Credit Union, and Puget Sound Energy available onsite to talk about energy efficiency and solar for your home. Attendees can chat with industry experts about items such as solar incentives and financing available through funding from the State of Washington. Attendees will also have the opportunity to sign-up for Green Power or to participate in a raffle for LED light bulbs and other home energy efficiency items.

“This event is part of the City’s participation in this year’s Earth Day theme of ‘It’s our turn to lead,'” said City Manager Doug Schulze. “We believe that by taking an active role to make our facilities more sustainable, we can help encourage others in our community to do the same.”
