Smith leads in Primary Election for Bainbridge Island School Board

Lynn Smith is leading in the race for the Director District 1 position on the Bainbridge Island School Board.

Smith has 71.9 percent of the vote over fellow candidate Duncan C. Macfarlane.

Macfarlane tallied 25.6 percent.

In the first vote tally on Election Night, Smith had 2,644 votes and Macfarlane, 940.

The nonpartisan office carries a four-year term.

A third candidate, Tatiana Epanchin-Troyan, was on the ballot but pulled out of the race soon after Candidate Filing Week for medical reasons.

Epanchin-Troyan received 69 votes, or 1.9 percent of all ballots cast, in the first vote count.

Smith, 49, is an instructional designer and training consultant for SAP (Systems, Applications & Products) implementation. She is a longtime volunteer in local schools.

Macfarlane, 50, is an attorney who started the firm of Macfarlane Law in 2007. He was previously a prosecutor in California, and is a producer, engineer and composer who founded Race Horse Studios in 1995.

A total of 3,675 ballots were counted on Tuesday, and the total number includes 22 write-in ballots.

Under the state’s top two primary system, both Smith and Macfarlane will advance to November’s General Election.
