Smith House may be delisted

The Bainbridge Island Historical Preservation Commission will meet next week to consider removing the Smith House from the city’s register of historic places.

Dave Williams, a member of the board of the Historical Preservation Commission, said the Smith House, located on New Sweden Avenue Northeast, was built in 1901 and is a great example of a Bainbridge Island farmhouse.

The owners were told that the listing on the register could be revoked when the home was added to the register in December 2006, and the city plans to honor that option, Williams said.

There are currently 29 properties on the register. The removal of the Smith House would be the first property taken off the list since it was created.

The commission will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 in the city council conference room at city hall.
