School board set to make key levy decisions this week

This virulent election season might be wrapping up, but ballot days are not past for Bainbridge voters, with two new proposals from the Bainbridge Island School Board already on the horizon.

The Educational Program & Operations Levy, which primarily funds staff salaries and benefits, and the Technology Levy, which covers technological devices and resources for students and teachers, are both up for renewal.

For the EP&O Levy, Superintendent Peter Bang-Knudsen has recommended that the district put forth a four-year request, for $10.4 million, to be collected in 2018, $10.6 million in 2019, $10.8 million in 2020 and $11 million in 2020.

These amounts are comparable to the taxes collected in years past, according to the school district, with an estimated levy rate of $1.50 per $1,000 assessed value in the first year, $1.51 in the second and $1.52 and 1.54, respectively, in the third and fourth. (The rates for the EP&O Levy in 2015, 2016 and 2017 were $1.68, $1.56 and $1.51 per $1,000 assessed value.)

Bang-Knudsen has also recommended a four-year levy to supplement the district’s technology expenditures at $2.2 million per year from 2018 through 2021. This is the same amount that the district collected from its previous technology levy in 2015, 2016 and 2017, which means that, with a larger tax base, the impact on individual taxpayers will be slightly lessened (0.31 per $1,000 assessed value, compared to a rate of 0.39 in 2015 or 0.36 in 2016).

The school board will consider both resolutions this week at its Thursday, Nov. 10 meeting. If approved, both proposals will be placed on the Feb. 14 ballot.
