Robert Dale Daugherty died at his home on Bainbridge Island on Dec. 24, 2015.

He was born on Oct. 24, 1925 in Marion, Indiana to Helen and Orville Daugherty. Bob was a proud farm boy who enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17.

Chosen for line officer’s training in electronic countermeasures he served aboard the USS Salem in World War II and was called back for the Korean War, serving on the USS Canberra.

He attended Princeton, Northwestern and graduated from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. He was a member of Phil Delta Theta.

He served in the Naval Reserve and began his insurance career at the Kemper Insurance Group, the Hartford Insurance Company and the Ohio Rating Bureau. Moving to California he was employed by an international insurance brokerage firm where his expertise in oil and gas, petrochemical and alternative energy led him to travel worldwide on behalf of their clients.

In 1990 he retired and moved to Bainbridge Island where he and his wife enjoyed boating, skiing, hunting, fishing, gardening and visiting with relatives and friends. He was a member of the Poulsbo Yacht Club for more than 20 years. Bob also had an avid interest in many things including economics, health and politics.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, of Bainbridge Island; sons Jeffrey Daugherty of Dillon, Montana, Michael Daugherty of Fiddletown, California and daughter, Robin Rogers of Big Bear Lake, Calif.; stepson Michael Spellman of Jamesville, New York and stepdaughter, Wendy Rising of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; grandchildren Glen Daugherty of Kalispell, Mont., Jenny Daugherty, Los Angeles, Calif., Jesse Rogers, Big Bear Lake, Jessica, Elaine and Amanda Spellman, Syracuse, N.Y. and Breianna Gagne, Cedar Crest, N.M.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Daugherty and father, Orville Daugherty and brother, Ferris Daugherty.

Bob was known and loved for his kindness, wisdom and humor and will be missed by all who knew him.
