The Bainbridge Island Police Department will give islanders a chance to properly dispose of unwanted prescription medications this month.

Police will accept unwanted or old medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27 at the police station on Winslow Way.

The event will be held in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, and the DEA will be responsible for properly disposing of any medications that are turned in.

Turning in the unwanted drugs helps keep chemicals out of water systems such as lakes, streams and aquifers.

The Bainbridge Island Police Department has commonly accepted unwanted medications in the past, but is discontinuing the service. Instead, it will hold events sponsored by the DEA twice a year, during the spring and in the fall.
