Police investigation on burglary, shooting continue

The investigation continues after the July 4 burglary and shooting on Wood Avenue as the suspect remains in the hospital getting medical treatment for three gunshot wounds.

An investigation continues following July 4 burglary and shooting on Wood Avenue as the suspect remains hospitalized after undergoing surgery for three gunshot wounds at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Police said the suspect is a Bainbridge Island man who, according to Bainbridge Police Chief Jon Fehlman, is expected to recover from his wounds. Fehlman said the man is currently on parole and has charges concerning other matters pending against him, and will likely face burglary and assault charges upon release from the hospital.

According to the Kitsap County Prosecutor’s Office, it has been decided that the Bremerton man who shot the suspect “while defending himself” won’t face charges.

Fehlman said police were called to the 500 block of Wood Avenue at 8:23 a.m. on Monday with a report that a burglary suspect was being detained after being shot following an attempted burglary inside a Stetson Avenue home.

The suspect was in the kitchen rummaging through cabinets and drawers when the Stetson Avenue homeowner first made contact. The subject, armed with a large knife, move toward the homeowner, who retreated to the backyard and repeatedly asked the man to leave.

The homeowner eventually armed himself with a large claw hammer after the subject attempted to reach for the homeowner’s children.

The suspect fled into the street and approached a Bremerton man who was sitting in his vehicle on Wood Avenue. When the suspect moved closer with his knife, police said, the man drew a concealed firearm and shot the suspect three times.

Police say the driver was lawfully carrying the gun and acted in self-defense. He then detained the wounded subject until police arrived.
