Port Madison looks at sewer

Port Madison area residents may have the opportunity to connect to a new waste treatment facility slated for Fay Bainbridge State Park.

City and state parks officials will discuss the proposal and take input during a public meeting Monday at City Hall.

Gov. Chris Gregoire and the state Legislature earmarked funding for the facility as part of an initiative to clean up pollution from sewer discharges.

The hook-up would allow the Point Monroe and Lafayette neighborhoods to abandon their septic tanks and drain fields, which disperses household waste underground, in favor of a system that pumps waste to a centralized facility.

The plan is favored by the Kitsap County Health District, which has responded to a large number of failed septic systems on Point Monroe. The state park commission is also welcoming the link as it would help keep the new system flowing during months when fewer people visit Fay Bainbridge.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
