New plan: Replace steel-electric hulls | Letters | Jan. 30

If my husband, retired Capt. Bob Engstrom’s memory serves him correctly, I don’t comprehend this not being proposed before.

Each of the three steel-electric Illahee-class boats had rebuilt $2.7 million three-deck cabins in 1987 and will now be sold or scrapped.

The Klickitat apparently has cracks in the hull, but if the other three are faulty after new plates were added, our quality Todd Shipyard should be able to replace all three hulls far less expensively than building new boats.

They are medium sized and a proven design for quality. Perhaps best of all, their rebuilt GM WWII sub-chaser engines are amazingly dependable.
