A 28-year-old Bremerton man was charged with first-degree trafficking of stolen property Tuesday in Kitsap County District Court after he allegedly resold a dishwasher on Craigslist that he stole from his employer.

David Shane Weatherly allegedly stole a Thermador stainless steel dishwasher from Schmidt’s Appliances on Bainbridge Island, where he worked, and sold it to a Bainbridge Island man.

The buyer of the dishwasher said Weatherly had told him that he had purchased the appliance for $625, and that he was told by a man named “Dave” that he was a contractor and had purchased the dishwasher for a job, but the job fell through and he needed to sell the machine.

When the buyer asked Dave where the dishwasher came from, the man said he had gotten it at Albert Lee Appliance in Seattle.

When the homeowner removed the dishwasher from its packaging, however, he found a Schmidt’s Appliance sticker on the appliance. When the buyer called Schmidt’s Appliance, he gave the store the model and serial number from the dishwasher, as well as the contact information he had from the man who sold him the appliance.

The owner of the appliance store checked his records and found that the phone number and address of the seller matched Weatherly’s address and number, and that the dishwasher had been purchased by the business in late August as a package deal. The dishwasher had a retail value of $1,449.

The customer who had bought the dishwasher then asked for an upgraded model, and the unwanted dishwasher was sent to the company’s warehouse on Day Road.

When police talked to the Bainbridge man who bought the dishwasher, he also told police that Dave had told him he had a refrigerator he wanted to sell, as well.

The business owner later told police that two dryers were also missing from his warehouse.

Weatherly was arrested and is currently being held in the Kitsap County Jail; bail has been set at $15,000.

First-degree trafficking carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence and $10,000 fine upon conviction.
