The Review visited Ordway Elementary to talk turkey — and Thanksgiving — with some of the school’s first-graders.

Do you like Thanksgiving?

“I’m from Australia. They give presents on Thanksgiving. You give presents to your parents.”

Why do people celebrate Thanksgiving?

“So they feel good.”

How do you celebrate Thanksgiving in Australia?

“We just give thanks and go to some random place and have dinner with our cousins.”

What’s your favorite part?

“My favorite part is where I buy all the stuff for my mom.”

Will you cook a turkey?

“Cook a turkey? Like we’re going to hunt the turkey down?”

A lot of people go to the store and get a turkey.

“The turkey will still have fur, on the body.”

They are frozen, and they take all the feathers off.

“And then you cut it?”

Yes.

“That’s what I would do. When we do Thanksgiving, we have ribs.”

Really?

“Yes. They are my favorite.”

Are they barbecue ribs?

“They look like barbecue. But they have the burned, if they want it. It’s just like chicken.”

Have you been learning about the Pilgrims.

“When we had the one Thanksgiving in Australia, I never heard about it.”

On Thanksgiving, we talk about the things we are thankful for. What are you thankful for?

“My parents. And my dog. Because we had a dog in Australia but we had to leave him because he was too old.”
