The Bainbridge Island Land Trust made another great stride toward preserving the island to mark the end of 2012.

The trust obtained approximately 12 acres of land, including prime shoreline property, in a $1 million acquisition announced late last week.

The property, now referred to as the West Bainbridge Shoreline Protection Project, will be preserved in its natural condition.

“This property hosts tremendous marine biodiversity, and has great potential as a shoreline nature preserve, connecting visitors with hiking, picnicking, scenic views and carefully planned shoreline access,” said Brenda Padgham, stewardship director for the trust.

The undeveloped property is just south of the Agate Pass Bridge on the western side of the island. It includes 4.5 acres of tidelands and 550 feet of shoreline. The upland area extends for more than 7.5 acres.

The trust was able to secure the purchase with a $250,000 down payment on Dec. 18, which it raised through private donations. It has two years to raise enough money to cover the remaining balance.

The trust plans to apply for grants in hopes of gaining the funds to pay off the rest of the $1 million purchase price.
