Nobody was killed, fortunately, but the loss was staggering.

Andrew Joslyn, a 2001 Bainbridge High graduate, and his longtime girlfriend, Susy Sun, also an accomplished musician, lost nearly everything they own, including their beloved house cat, in a recent apartment fire in Seattle.

The couple have been performing together for more than a year, and had plans to release an album together later this year.

The fire occurred while the musicians were out of town, the result of an electrical wiring fault, according to Joslyn’s parents Hajnalka and Marc Joslyn.

“They lost their beloved cat, Mendelssohn, and 90 percent of their belongings, including music instruments and music scores, a PA system and other electronics, computers, and most of their personal belongings,” Hajnalka Joslyn wrote. “They need help to raise enough money to pull their home and music lives back together.”

To that end, the couple will perform at a benefit concert at 8 p.m. Friday, March 13, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.

A no-host wine tasting will be offered by Rolling Bay Winery starting at 6:30 p.m.

The suggested donation for the concert is $25.

A Fire Fund for Andrew and Susy has also been set up at Kitsap Bank (10140 NE High School Road).

Joslyn grew up on Bainbridge and has been playing the violin since the age of 5. He played in Bainbridge High School’s performance of “Fiddler on the Roof,” and played with the Seattle Youth Symphony.

At age 27, he made the full-time commitment and became a professional musician.

Since then, Joslyn has toured with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (he performed with them at last year’s Grammy Awards), Judy Collins, David Bazan (of Pedro the Lion), Kris Orlawsky and Mary Lambert.

He has played with the Seattle Rock Orchestra, has written string arrangements for many other musicians and has written film scores. He also started the Passenger String Quartet, which will play at Bloedel Reserve in May.

Sun, also a Washingtonian, is a singer-songwriter, and has several CDs to her credit.
