Island loses one of three gas stations: 76 station closes on High School Road

The Island Market and 76 gas station on High School Road was abruptly closed this week.

The Island Market and 76 gas station on High School Road was abruptly closed this week.

People stopping by the gas station and convenience store on Tuesday found “Out of Order” signs taped to each of the six pump stations, and the doors to the gas station and convenience store locked with a thick chain and padlock.

Many of the shelves inside the store had been emptied, although some coolers along one wall of the deli area still contained beverages.

The closure caught many by surprise. A near-constant stream of potential customers pulled up to the pumps, or walked up to the business, only to find the pumps shut off and the doors locked shut.

The property is owned by KJC Enterprises, Inc. of Bainbridge Island.

According to the Western Washington Bankruptcy Court, KJC Enterprises voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March, and the case was closed April 8.

The shutdown of the 76 station leaves just two gas stations in operation on Bainbridge Island; the Chevron on High School Road and the Shell station on Fletcher Bay Road.
