The cat credited for saving a North End man’s life has been found alive.

Assistant Fire Chief Luke Carpenter of the Bainbridge Island Fire Department said the cat’s owner stopped by the department’s Madison Avenue station Friday afternoon to thank firefighters for their help following Wednesday’s house fire on Miller Road.

The homeowner came to the station to share his gratitude and to also return a pair of glasses that a firefighter had lost while gearing up in the early morning darkness to battle the March 11 blaze.

The man also told firefighters Friday that his cat had been found alive and the pair have been reunited.

Officials reported earlier this week that the resident had escaped his home before it was consumed by flames after his cat started “causing a ruckus” and woke the man up.

The man smelled smoke and escaped as the flames grew, and firefighters found the home fully engulfed in flames — some shooting more than 50 feet high up a cedar tree next to the residence — when they arrived just after 4 a.m. Firefighters from three departments responded to the blaze, and emergency workers stayed on the scene for more than five hours Wednesday.

The home was a total loss. Investigators later determined the fire was accidental and likely started near a pellet stove.

The cat was not found in the aftermath of the fire, and the fire department lost contact with the man until Friday.

Carpenter said firefighters weren’t sure the cat had made it out of the house.

And given that the home was destroyed and left in ruins by the devastating fire, it was a safe assumption.

“We had kind of written the cat off,” Carpenter said.

Though firefighters’ main concern was the health of the resident and putting the fire out, Carpenter added he was glad to hear of the feline’s escape.

It was not immediately clear how many of its nine lives the furry little hero has left.
