First look at new mural coming to Winslow Way

Come springtime, colors will pop all over Bainbridge Island, including on Winslow Way.

Arts and Humanities Bainbridge, a nonprofit dedicated to bridging the art and business community, revealed the first renderings of a new mural that will decorate the westerly wall in “The Cove” retail inlet at 285 Winslow Way E in downtown BI. The new public art will be reminiscent of a postcard, featuring multiple symbols that define BI culture, based on feedback AHB gathered from the community.

Major elements include the Washington State Ferries, a great blue heron, Mount Rainier, Elliott Bay, Frog Rock, pickleball, the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial, Blakely Harbor, and strawberries to represent BI’s farming legacy.

Molly Brahmer, local muralist and 2024 recipient of AHB’s individual artist grant, designed the piece. The project was funded through state arts grants and by the Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island, and was administered by AHB and the Bainbridge Creative District with input from management of The Cove.

Painting and installation will take several weeks, during which AHB encourages residents to stop by and view Brahmer’s progress. A free celebratory event to unveil the completed mural will take place sometime this spring.
