The City of Bainbridge Island has promoted Jon Fehlman to the position of chief of police.

City Manager Mark Dombroski confirmed in a press release that Fehlman, the interim chief since the departure of Matt Haney in January, will inherit the position, effective Sept. 16.

Dombroski also announced that with Fehlman’s promotion, the position of deputy police chief will be cut as part of a reorganization of the police department.

Fehlman came to Bainbridge from Santa Rosa, Calif., in December 2008 when he was named the deputy police chief following a nationwide search.

Fehlman began his police career in Laguna Beach, Calif., where he served as a patrol officer for 11 years.

During 12 years with the Santa Rosa Police Department, Fehlman served as the lieutenant in charge of the investigations bureau and the field services division.

Fehlman sat on the board of directors for both the National Alliance for Mental Illness and United Against Sexual Assault.

He has received the Medal of Valor, Good Conduct Award, Distinguished Service Award, Community Policing Award and was twice honored as the Officer of the Year.
