Law enforcement agencies in Kitsap County will have extra patrols on the road during the holiday season to look for impaired drivers.

The Bainbridge Island, Bremerton, Naval Base Kitsap, Port Orchard, Poulsbo and Suquamish Police Departments, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol are working toward zero traffic deaths by participating in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. Between Nov. 27 and Jan. 1, extra officers will be looking for drivers under the influence on Washington roadways.

The enforcement effort is organized and supported by the Kitsap County Traffic Safety Task Force.

Officials noted that DUI is still the leading cause of traffic death.  During the last five holiday seasons, from 2008 to 2012, an average of 49 people died in traffic crashes in Washington between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.
