More students than expected have enrolled in Bainbridge Island schools this fall, district officials reported Thursday.

First-day enrollment numbers for the Bainbridge Island School District show a first day enrollment of 3,700 students. That’s 115 more FTE (full-time equivalent) students than the district had anticipated.

District officials said the enrollment increase is distributed across all grade levels, from kindergarten through the 12th grade.

The higher student count has prompted the district to add staffing and additional class sections.

The district has added two elementary classes — a third-grade class and a fourth-grade class at Captain Charles Wilkes Elementary School — and high school sections in English, Math, Science, Health and World Languages.

Many new families enrolled between mid-August and the first day of school, said district spokeswoman Pam Keyes.

Officials said enrollment numbers are preliminary and may change; enrollment numbers tend to fluctuate during the first few days and weeks of every school year.

“We will be monitoring enrollment and class size carefully to see if additional adjustments are needed,” said District Superintendent Faith Chapel.
