Clinton easily wins against Sanders with Bainbridge voters

Trump is runaway choice for island Republicans.

When Bainbridge Islanders crowded caucuses this spring, voters overwhelming endorsed Bernie Sanders as the Democratic Party pick for the White House.

An analysis of preliminary precinct returns for Bainbridge Island for the recent Presidential Primary, however, shows most voters aren’t much feeling the Bern any more.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton easily outpaced the senator from Vermont by collecting 57.6 percent of all Bainbridge ballots cast for Democratic Party candidates in the May 24 Presidential Primary. Sanders finished with 42 percent.

It was a stark turnaround from the Democratic caucuses earlier this year, when Sanders picked up nearly 62 percent of Bainbridge’s delegates.

Clinton’s win on Bainbridge was not total, however, as she won the majority in 18 of the island’s 22 precincts, according to an analysis by the Bainbridge Review.

Even so, the second-time candidate for the Democratic nomination easily outpaced her countywide performance in Kitsap, where she enjoyed a slim win over Sanders — with 50.1 percent of the vote to her opponent’s 49.6 percent — with her big showing on Bainbridge.

Clinton did better than her countywide average in each of Bainbridge’s 22 precincts, according to unofficial vote tallies.

She fared best in the precinct of Port Madison, with 71.5 percent of the Democratic vote.

Clinton also surpassed Sanders’ caucus mark of 57.6 percent in nine island precincts, and passed the 60 percent mark in seven other precincts in addition to Port Madison (Azalea, 62 percent; Wing Point, 69; Crystal Springs, 61; Ferncliff, 62; Fort Ward, 61, Tolo, 64; and Seabold, 60.2).

Sanders picked up the majority of Democratic votes in four precincts.

He did best in Eagle Harbor, with 52.6 percent, followed by Meadowmeer (51 percent), Blue Heron (51) and Lovgren (50.5).

Clinton was last on the Presidential Primary ballot in February 2008, when Barack Obama won the Kitsap County vote with 69.9 percent to Clinton’s 28.6 percent. It was a crowded field, with eight candidates, including Joe Biden, John Edwards, Chris Dodd, Mike Gravel, Dennis Kucinich and Bill Richardson.

This year, with just two names on the ballot, Bainbridge swung Clinton’s way during the election, which was basically a beauty contest since the Democratic Party will award delegates to the party’s national convention based on Washington state’s earlier caucuses.

On the Republican side, though, the vote mattered.

A review of precinct returns show Republicans on the island overwhelming prefer Donald Trump as the GOP nominee.

The New York real estate tycoon and reality television celebrity won an easy majority in each of the island’s 22 precincts.

Overall, he won 61.3 percent of the vote, followed by Ohio governor John Kasich (27 percent), U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (8 percent) and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson (2 percent).

Trump did best in the precinct of Meadowmeer, where he pulled in 83.7 percent of the GOP vote. He also was strong in Eagle Harbor (75 percent), Seabold (72), liberty (68), Torvanger (68) and Island Center (65).

In unofficial vote totals, Kasich did best in Crystal Springs and Ferncliff, while Cruz was strongest in Winslow and Crystal Springs.

Voters were required to choose a political party to have their ballots counted in the Presidential Primary.

A total of 7,795 ballots were counted in the preliminary tally examined by the Review, with 80 percent of those ballots going to the two candidates on the Democratic Party ticket.

The number of ballots cast for Democrats was slightly lower this year than in 2008. In 2008, a total of 6,343 ballots were cast. Unofficial tallies show 6,239 votes cast this year in Bainbridge precincts.

Overall, turnout in Kitsap County was estimated at 36.5 percent.
