Car safety seat checks coming to island

The fire department has teamed up with Bainbridge Pediatrics along with Safe Kids Kitsap to present a quarterly child car seat check for islanders. The inaugural car seat check will be held at the fire department’s Phelps Road station from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27.

The Bainbridge Island Fire Department wants to put kids in their place, properly and safely.

The fire department has teamed up with Bainbridge Pediatrics along with Safe Kids Kitsap to present a quarterly child car seat check for islanders. The inaugural car seat check will be held at the fire department’s Phelps Road station from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27.

The fire department plans to hold future car seat checks on the fourth Monday of every third month.

Assistant Chief Luke Carpenter noted a Safe Kids USA statistic that said as much as 71 percent of child safety seats are poorly installed or are being used incorrectly.

Combined with the fact that car accidents are among one of the leading causes of death for children under the age of 14, it makes a properly installed child safety seat a considerable step in keeping kids safe, he said.
