Parking fines

Most parking violations in Bainbridge Island will lead to $50 fines, but fines are higher in some areas.

Such as, illegally parking in a disabled spot $450; an electric vehicle parking stall $124; in a fire lane $100 plus towing; and restricted carpool parking $50 the first time, $100 after that.

90-day delay

The city of Bainbridge has extended until March 23, 2023 its deadline for food establishments to use their remaining non-home-compostable supplies before incurring penalties.

The BI chamber and restaurant owners asked for the extension based on excessive inventory.

On Jan. 1, laws to reduce waste take effect, including a 25-cent fee for all single-use disposable cups. Patrons are asked to bring their own mugs instead.

Slower speed

A public hearing will take place on reduced Bainbridge-wide speed limits.

A consultant and the city’s Public Works Department recommend reducing speeds on BI from 5-10 mph to make them standardized and to increase safety.

The public hearing will be at the City Council meeting at 6 p.m. at City Hall and on Zoom.

Gun to head

A woman escaped from a Bremerton man who held a gun to her head Dec. 16 in a store parking lot in Silverdale, court records say.

The 42-year-old man was held in Kitsap County Jail after being charged in Superior Court Dec. 19 with two counts of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon. Bail was set at $1.25 million. If convicted, he faces 20 years in prison and a $20 fine on each count.

The crime occurred at about 5:24 p.m. in the 3200 block of NW Randall Way. Three people were in a car driving when the man told one woman he wanted to meet her kids. She said she doesn’t like them to meet new people, as they only had known each other for about four weeks. They pulled into the parking lot, and the man ordered the other passenger to leave. “If you don’t do what I tell you to do I will shoot her,” the man said as he grabbed the other woman and held the gun to her head. The woman was able to escape from the vehicle as deputies closed in. The suspect’s 40-caliber firearm was taken, and he was handcuffed.

Retail theft

The state patrol and Kitsap sheriff’s office combined Dec. 14 on a law enforcement emphasis to thwart retail theft in Silverdale.

Thirty loss prevention officers arrested 10 people that day at various stores. A total of $4,000 in merchandise was attempted to be stolen, with officers recovering $3,800 of the product.

After hours

Paula Weissinger of State Farm Insurance on Knechtel Way will host the next Bainbridge chamber mixer After Hours event Jan. 26.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. Sponsor Eleven Winery will provide complimentary wine.

BIMA movie

The Bainbridge Island Museum of Art will present its first movie of 2023 Jan. 3.

“Camille Claudel” is part of BIMA’s Mentors Series of smARTfilms.

When renowned French sculptor Auguste Rodin (Gérard Depardieu) notices the raw sculpting talent of the beautiful and precocious Camille Claudel (Isabelle Adjani), the two artists begin a scandalous love affair. Camille becomes Auguste’s muse and assistant, sacrificing her own work to contribute to his sculptures. However, when her work goes unrecognized and she desires attention of her own, Camille is left alone and gradually spirals into mental illness.

The movie will be shown Jan. 3 at 2 and 7 p.m.; $12 admission.
