BI community members protest national, world issues

Locals participated in two rallies that took place on Bainbridge Island last weekend to protest issues across the country and the world.

On Jan. 6 members of Indivisible Bainbridge Island rallied in Winslow at Waypoint Park where Highway 305 meets Winslow Way by the ferry terminal.

They rallied in solidarity to remind everyone about the insurrection on that day in 2021. The insurrection was a cumulation of President Trump’s months-long attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election, where he lost to President Biden.

A large group of his supporters stormed the nation’s capitol that day, injuring about 140 police officers, four of whom died, and one of the insurgents was shot dead. Members of Congress had to be evacuated.

Indivisible Bainbridge Island is a unit of the national Indivisible group, which has groups in every Congressional district in the country.

“We stand against Trump and his adherents in our quest to preserve our democracy in the United States,” member Holly Brewer said.

Then on Jan. 7, a group of about 40 came together on BI calling for a ceasefire in Gaza “to protect the children experiencing the horror of ethnic cleansing and genocide,” said Leah Leicester, one of the protesters.

Signs were raised and chants of “ceasefire” echoed through the intersection. Participants encourage people to call their lawmakers to get their support.

The group is gathering again Jan. 14 from 1-2:30 p.m. across from the Coffee Oasis in Kingston.

The group is “hoping to raise awareness of how our tax dollars are paying for unnecessary war and violence,” Leicester said. As for Sunday’s rally, “Everyone is welcome but hate in any form is not.”
