Outgoing Bainbridge High School principal Brent Peterson will be honored as one of 2013’s “Outstanding Educators” in a ceremony next month at Poulsbo City Hall.

Peterson, who is finishing up his final year at BHS, is being recognized by the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators.

“Brent was selected for his record of high success in promoting student achievement and exemplary leadership in improving education as identified by parents, administrators and colleagues,” Beth Schneidler, president of the Alpha Sigma Chapter, said in a letter praising Peterson for his work in education.

“We believe one of the avenues of achieving excellence is to give public acknowledgement and heartfelt gratitude to educators for the long hours they dedicate to enhancing the lives of youth in our communities. They are unsung heroes whose contributions are too seldom recognized,” Schneidler continued.

Peterson is retiring from the Bainbridge Island School District in June after a 39-year career in education.

He began his career as a classroom teacher, and served as principal at Captain Johnston Blakely Elementary from 1981 to 1994, before taking the post as assistant superintendent for instructional support services for the Bainbridge school district from 1994 to 2001.

Peterson has been the principal at Bainbridge High for the past 10 years.

“Brent is an exceptional leader and colleague,” said  Superintendent Faith Chapel.

Peterson will be honored in a ceremony Monday, March 4 in the council chambers at Poulsbo City Hall.

Delta Kappa Gamma is an honor society of educators from 17 countries with more than 100,000 members. One of the purposes of the organization is to promote excellence in education.
