Be safe and be seen on the road this winter

A partnership of Kitsap Transit, the Bainbridge Island Police Department, Squeaky Wheels and Go! Bainbridge will be brightening up the holidays around Winslow again this season, but their efforts have nothing to do with Christmas lights.

“We are once again putting on our Saint Lucia ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ event to promote walking and biking safety,” explained Go! Bainbridge chair Dana Berg.

Through Friday, Dec. 12, group representatives will hand out small personal safety lights around downtown Winslow and on the ferries.

Then, from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 (the actual celebration day of Saint Lucia) strolling women dressed in white with red sashes will be on Winslow Way giving out lights, safety info and holiday treats.

“St. Lucia, or Santa Lucia, is the patron saint of light and is celebrated in Italy and Scandinavia,” Berg explained. “Dec. 13 was thought to be the solstice, and so became a day of celebrating the return of light.”
