Bainbridge divers win medals at Holiday Classic

Members of the Bainbridge Island Diving Club are celebrating their numerous top-10 finishes at the recent Amateur Athletic Union Holiday Classic.

BEAVERTON, OREGON – Members of the Bainbridge Island Diving Club are celebrating their numerous top-10 finishes at the recent Amateur Athletic Union Holiday Classic.

The club traveled to Tualatin Hills in Beaverton, Oregon to compete in the 2014 AAU Holiday Classic on the weekend of

Dec. 5-7. It was the first meet of the 2015 Junior Olympic season and divers on teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Utah competed.

Bryn Tiernan started it off for the team by competing in the Future Champions girls Level 3 Division and earned a fourth-place finish in the 3-meter springboard competition with a score of 99.00. She came back in the 1-meter springboard event to take the first place gold medal with a score of 126.10.

Rhonda Feeback was next competing in the Masters Division and won a third-place medal on the 1-meter board. She scored 154.55 and followed up with a second-place finish on the 3-meter with a score of 193.55.

Duncan Platz stepped up for the boys with a second-place finish on both boards in the Junior Olympic 12-13 age group with a score of 216.85 on 1-meter and 152.00 on 3-meter.

Cammy Rouser competed in the 14-15 girls Junior Olympic events and placed sixth on 1-meter with a 267.75. She also took eighth place on 3-meter with a score of 255.60.

Zora Opalka also competed in the 14-15 girls Junior Olympic Division and earned a seventh-place finish on tower with a 189.20. She won fifth place with a score of 277.45 on the 1-meter, and took seventh place with a score of 269.20 on the 3-meter.

Henry Sauermann had a big meet with three Junior Olympic events in the 11-and-under age group. He scored 134.60 points on 1-meter for a second-place finish, a 148.95 for another silver medal on the 3-meter, and had a gold medal performance in the platform event with a score of 99.30.

Jackie Hellmers brought home a gold medal from the Future Champions platform event with a score of 130.00, and came back in the Junior Olympic Division 14-15 girls age group with an eighth place score of 177.90 on 1-meter. She also had a ninth-place finish with 200.20 points on 3-meter.

In the synchronized diving event, Zora and Henry teamed up and placed fifth with a score of 141.80, while Duncan and Jackie took third place with a score of 162.60.

In the all-girls event, Jackie and Cammy earned fifth place with a score of 160.30.
