Bainbridge students continue to outperform peers on SBA tests

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction released results from the 2015-16 Smarter Balanced Assessment this week showing that students in Bainbridge public schools continue to perform well above the state average.

Bainbridge Island School District students outperformed their peers across every grade level and subject. For example, the percentage of state students that passed sixth and eighth grade math assessments was in the high 40s, while the percentage of Bainbridge students that passed those same exams was in the mid to upper 70s.

The trend held for English language assessments too, with a 55 to 58 percent passage rate across the state for third- and fourth-grade test takers.

On Bainbridge, 75 and 82 percent of students in those grade levels met or exceeded the standard.

For high school students, passing a state test is a graduation requirement. Bainbridge students were far more successful on this measure than their peers.

Ninety one percent of district 11th-graders met or exceeded the ELA standard, whereas statewide, only 76 percent did so.

“The results indicate that our students are learning at high levels and our teachers are teaching well-aligned, rigorous content,” said Jeff McCormick, the district’s director of assessment.

Across the district, the largest improvement was in fifth-grade language arts and third-grade math.

In 2014-2015, 72 percent of third-graders met the math standard, but that percentage shot up to 81 this school year.

Similar gains were made for fifth-grade math and sixth-grade math and language arts, with more minor improvement elsewhere.

Fourth grade was the only grade level that did not show improvement across the district. In 2014-15, 85 percent of fourth-graders passed the language arts standard, while in 2015-16, only 82 percent did so.

Fourth-graders also experienced a slump in math scores. This year, 83 percent of fourth-grade students passed the math standard, 3 percent less than passed the standard in 2014-15.

Of the island elementary schools, Captain Johnston Blakely Elementary had the highest percentage of third-graders pass the assessments and Captain Charles Wilkes Elementary had the lowest, though its students still fared exceedingly well compared to their peers across the state.

This was the second year the SBA was administered to Bainbridge students.
